S.O.A.P. is a simple tool for opening up the
bible so you hear God talking, and then live it.
Step 1:
Before you begin reading the passage, ask Jesus to speak to you
personally through the words you are about to read. Then carefully read
the passages. Take note of what God is saying to you and underline if
you wish, those verses that are particularly meaningful to you.
Read expectantly. In Jesus, God certainly wants to be transparent, known
by you.
Step 2:
When you have finished reading the passage record what God has just
shown you.
You could write it down in a Journal (we have Growth Journals
available). If you are not a writer, read it onto a tap, jot down the
main points, draw it. Record what God has just shown you in the way that
best suits you.
Use the S.O.A.P. model as a guide.
S = Scripture
Which particular Scripture spoke to you from today’s reading? Write it
out in full.
O = Observation
Outline the main theme of your reading.
What is taking place?
Who is acting?
What is the main point of the verse?
What thoughts come out of the reading?
Are there any promises being made or specific lifestyle directions?
Probe the text for all you’re worth.
A = Application
Make it personal. Outline how this reading applies to you. How will you
be different because of what you have read?
Take it from theory to how you live. In Jesus, God is wanting you to be
involved in his life and not a theory.
This is the crucial step; application takes you from talking about doing
something to actually living it. In Jesus, God didn’t talk about loving
you, he loves you.
P = Prayer
End by writing out a prayer that expresses your heart to Jesus about
what you read.
Remember …
This is a tool to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus. You can
be flexible. If you miss a day or two, don’t attempt to ‘catch up’, just
jump forward to the current one.
If you have trouble getting through the allocated
readings for the day, choose one of the readings and stick with that
book from the daily reading plan.
The goal is not about ‘achieving a devotion’, it’s about living out your
relationship with Jesus by developing a healthy habit of spending
regular time together.
Relationships grow best when we spend time together sharing from the
heart.
Jesus is God sharing his heart with you.
If you commit to a daily time with God, your life will be truly
revolutionised.
Enjoy the journey!
